What is social work profession?
Social work is a practice based profession to enhance social functioning of Group/Individual/communities in a way to make them self reliant for their overall well being.
Basic motto of social work is to-- help people to help themselves.
Social work as a profession started in the 19th century in England during industrial revolution through charity organization society & developed more professionally when Marry Richmond described “Social work” from the perspective of Social Diagnosis & won Noble prize in 1931.
Over the years it developed as a full fledged profession in western countries & in India it is developing fast day by day. Basic model, we have hired from the western countries.
In western countries-”Social Work” as a profession is protected by Law for e.g like -Licensing system, professional body etc.
Why to study Social work?
In India, demand for social worker had been increased over the last few years & it is reflected through the advertisement of the MSW(Master of Social Work) professional in the recruitment process. This recruitment is not in any particular field, on the contrary, in almost all sectors right from Civil society Organization, Corporate sector, Government Sector, Academic etc.
Perhaps Social work is the course by which candidate may apply as a counsellor, HRD professional(at corporate sector),Social worker post at the Government hospital, in other administrative post of the Government sector, as a researcher in Research organization/Institute/university or can join as a academician.
They can also work at the correctional settings. In fact there exists ample opportunity & even you might find it out through the recruitment pattern in news paper/other recruitment sources.
Where to study?
Well in India there are many Institutes/university which offer this course. But only few of them are offering BSW(bachelor of social work). After XII, you can join in some of the Institutes/Universities mentioned below. Here are some Institutes /Universities that offer both Bsw and Msw Course.
1. Visva- Bharati University(Shanti Niketan),West Bengal.
2. College of Social work(Nirmala Niketan),Mumbai
3. Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi.
4. Vidya Sagar School of Social work,Salt lake,Kolkata,West Bengal
5. Assam University(Silchar,Assam),
At central universities, like Visva Bharati, Jamia Milia Islamia, Assam University course fee is low & it is affordable by the students. They can continue their Master degree after completion of 3 years Bachelor in those Institutes.
Among many universities/Institutes -TISS( Tata Institute of Social Science) is a premier institute in the country which provide MSW only at Master level.
One has to appear in entrance test in order to study social work course in those Institutes mentioned above.
Specialization:-
There are two types of social work course--Generic & Specialization based. There are many specialization in social work course namely--
A) Family & Child welfare.
B) Industrial relation Personnel Management & Labour Welfare.
C) Criminology & Correctional Administration.
D) Community Development.
E) Medical & psychiatric social work.
Scope & Availability of specialization vary as per the Institutes/Universities. Visva- Bharati university offer generic course where at TISS, you have to study Personnel Management as a separate course, & it is not included in MSW degree.
Placement:-
Social work course is in demand & after completion students get engaged in work. Remuneration might vary as per organizational norms. For e.g at Visva- bharati-- More than 90% students get placed & remuneration might be anywhere from-- Rs 15,000 to rs 30,000 at the starting point.
Though there are no fixed average in case of social work profession after finishing of course but they get placed. At TISS, many students move for higher studies(M.phill/Ph.d) instead of getting placed.
There are many international organizations which offer decent package for the experienced candidates. So after few years of experiences candidate can earn much more.
Course fee:-
As I told earlier, course fees vary as per organization. At TISS, it was rs 1,08,600 (for non hostellers)& rs 2,32,600(hostellers) in 2018.
In case of central university like Visva-Bharati university- course fee for 5years BSW & MSW is less than rs 30,000.
Getting placed after finishing of course of social work is not a problem but one has to think before coming to this profession. What ever might be the package, & whatever might be the settings--mental health, clinic, hospital, community set up--one should be dedicated in rendering his service towards his/her clients(individual/group/community).
Social workers are called social engineers & in India, there is demand to protect the word "Social Work" by law like other western countries so that there exists differences between Volunteer & Social work professional.
In forthcoming days, there will be shortage of man power of professional social workers. Person with especially specialization with Medical & Psychiatric social work will be in more demand. During pandemic shortage of professional social worker reflected already.
